Types of Stones Used in SPA Treatment



The trend of spa is booming around the world very fast. There are different types of spas available today all over the world. Some of them are destination spa, ayurvedic spa, pampering or relaxation spa, medical spa, thermal spa and so on. The role of stone is very crucial in spa treatment. The stones plays  the role of massage tools. It treats very well in arthritis, relieve stress and boost up your relaxation power. Also cold stone spa helps to recover from inflammation and injured muscles.
A massage therapist selects therapy based on heat or cold retention of stone, their smoothness and their mineral qualities.

Below are the types of spa stone used most:-

1.     Igneous Rock:- Also known as Basalt rock which is formed by volcano when its surface cools down and hardens. These are most common type of stones, which hardens and opens on hot weather.  Basalt rock can be grey, green or black in colour depending on climate. These type of stones are preferred most as they are flat, smooth and can lie on the body easily without any kind of re-shaping. One of the striking feature of Basalt rock is that once it heats up, it will remain hot for longer period of time which is ideal for massage.

2.     Sedimentary Rock:- Sedimentary rocks are also known as marine stones formed in coral reefs. The best examples of sedimentary rocks is limestone and sandstone. Many therapist prefer these because of their healing mineral component and holding heat for long time properties. Apart from this they are smooth enough to use it without applying oil and much more mineral rich compared to others.

3.     Metamorphic Rock:- These are polished stone ideal for clod stone massage. Most probably these are marble stones. This is kind of spa is very useful in removal of inflammation. This spa stone goes well with a chilling condition. Some of the best examples are slate and jade.

4.     Minerals and Gemstones:- Therapist selects the best mineral stone suitable to you giving a crystal massage. This kind of massage meant for healing, balancing and rejuvenating your body. The most common type is Quartz which can be used as a substitute of marble stone in cold massage. Other stones are topaz, tourmaline, obsidian, hematite and amethyst. Some therapists also prefer gemstones over minerals.  These gemstones include garnet, diamond, pearl, turquoise. Some also prefer spa stones that are colour based. Light pink quartz is most common among all. Others are blue and black stones used for cooling and healing purpose respectively.
